Double Vision / Strabismus
Strabismus is the term used to define the eyes when they are out of alignment with each other. When the eyes are misaligned it can result in diplopia (having double vision).
Strabismus can have onset at birth in which case the double vision isn’t usually noticed because the brain is able to adapt and ignore the problem, however, if strabismus develops in adulthood it can result in seeing double which can be debilitating and can also signal a medical emergency.
Prompt, early treatment regardless of the onset of strabismus is key. There are different treatment options available depending on the type of strabismus one has. These treatments range from vision therapy to using prism in corrective lenses and even surgery to correct the misaligned eyes.
Dr. Petersen specializes in the treatment of strabismus and the resulting double vision.
