J. Ryan McMurtrey received his Bachelors degree from Weber State University in May of 2003. His emphasis was in Emergency Medicine, Health Science, and Spanish. That same year he was admitted into Orthoptic Program with the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Minnesota.

He completed his training in July of 2005. He spent his first year working with the Virginia Eye Institue in Richmond, Virginia. He then returned to Utah and has been working here ever since. Ryan is the only Orthoptist employed in the State of Utah at this time.

An orthoptist is a health care professional in Ophthalmology who specializes in the evalutaion and treatment of Adult and Pediatric Strabismus (eye alignment). He works under the direction of Dr. David B. Petersen in helping him assess and treat the causes of eye misalignment in adult and pediatric patients that are seen at our office. Ryan also dedicates much of his time in following pediatric patients that are being treated for amblyopia, which is often associated with strabismus.

Ryan is a current member of the American Association of Certified Orthoptists. He is also an Orthoptic member of the Amercian Association of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, and the American Academy of Pediatrics. Ryan also serves as a clinical coordinator for Dr. Petersen, as we are currently an investigation study site for the Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group,a national research group for pediatric eye diseases.
